In this lesson, you will learn how to conjugate regular German verbs in the present tense (Präsens). This is one of the most important grammar topics because it allows you to build your first complete sentences.

Once you understand verb conjugation, you will be able to talk about yourself, your work, your family, your hobbies, and your daily activities.

What Is a Verb?

A verb is an action word.

Examples:

  • to work
  • to learn
  • to live
  • to play
  • to speak

In German:

  • arbeiten = to work
  • lernen = to learn
  • wohnen = to live
  • spielen = to play
  • sprechen = to speak

Personal Pronouns

Before conjugating verbs, you must know the personal pronouns.

The Basic Rule

Most regular German verbs end in -en.

Examples:

  • arbeiten
  • lernen
  • wohnen
  • spielen

To conjugate a regular verb:

Step 1

Remove -en

lernen → lern

wohnen → wohn

arbeiten → arbeit

Step 2

Add the correct ending.
