If you want to speak German fluently, you must learn separable verbs (trennbare Verben). These verbs are extremely common in everyday German and are used at work, at school, in hospitals, during phone calls, and in daily conversations throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Many students preparing for Goethe, TELC, ÖSD, citizenship exams, Ausbildung programs, or professional recognition (Anerkennung) find separable verbs confusing at first. Fortunately, the rule is simple.

What Are Separable Verbs?

A separable verb consists of two parts:

prefix + verb

Examples:

  • anrufen = to call
  • aufstehen = to get up
  • einkaufen = to shop
  • mitkommen = to come along
  • zurückkommen = to come back
  • fernsehen = to watch TV

In the present tense, the prefix moves to the end of the sentence.

Example

Infinitive:

anrufen

Present tense:

Ich rufe meine Mutter an.

The verb stays in second position, while the prefix goes to the end.

The Most Common Separable Prefixes

  • an-
  • auf-
  • ein-
  • aus-
  • mit-
  • nach-
  • vor-
  • weg-
  • zurück-
  • zu-

Learning these prefixes will help you understand thousands of German verbs.

Important Rule

In the present tense:

Verb = Position 2

Prefix = End of the sentence

Correct

  • Ich rufe meinen Freund an.
  • Wir kaufen heute ein.
  • Du stehst früh auf.

Incorrect

  • Ich anrufe meinen Freund.
  • Wir einkaufen heute.
  • Du aufstehst früh.
